Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen is optimistic about making his return for Galatasaray’s UEFA Champions League encounter with Sporting Lisbon next week after sustaining a groin injury during Friday’s 3-2 win over Istanbul Başakşehir.
The Nigerian forward was forced off in the 33rd minute after picking up the injury, but he has played down fears over his condition and remains hopeful of featuring against the Portuguese club, subject to clearance from Galatasaray’s medical and coaching teams.
“I have nothing, I didn’t want to risk myself. If our coach deems it appropriate for the Sporting Lisbon match, I want to be on the field,” Osimhen said.
Osimhen had earlier opened the scoring for Galatasaray with a superb finish into the top corner after receiving a pass from Lucas Torreira. However, he was unable to continue after experiencing discomfort and was replaced by Barış Alper Yılmaz.
Galatasaray later revealed that Osimhen had experienced strain and pain in his right adductor muscle group, with treatment immediately commenced.
The Turkish champions also disclosed that further tests, including an MRI scan, were being carried out on Osimhen and teammate Mario Lemina, with the medical evaluations expected to be concluded on Sunday.
The injury initially cast doubt over Osimhen’s participation in Galatasaray’s Champions League fixture, but his latest comments have raised hopes that he could recover in time to face Sporting Lisbon.
His return would be a significant boost for Galatasaray as they look to have their key striker back without risking a prolonged absence.
Osimhen’s condition will also be closely watched by Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau.
