Cole Palmer and Trent Alexander-Arnold have been recalled to the England squad by manager Thomas Tuchel for the Three Lions’ upcoming Nations League fixtures, while Manchester City star Phil Foden has been left out.
Palmer and Alexander-Arnold were both omitted from England’s World Cup squad this summer, with the Three Lions eventually finishing third. Their absence from the tournament had sparked criticism of Tuchel.
The latest 27-man squad also includes Alex Scott and Liverpool teenager Rio Ngumoha, who were previously involved with England’s training group during their World Cup preparations.
Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite has also earned a recall, having made his only senior England appearance in June 2024. Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo remains in the squad despite failing to feature at the World Cup.
Leeds United striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin has been rewarded for his strong start to the Premier League season. His three goals are behind only Erling Haaland’s four among all players, while he remains the highest-scoring English player in the league since the beginning of last season.
Among the notable omissions are Foden, Morgan Gibbs-White and Adam Wharton. Gibbs-White has enjoyed an impressive 2026, registering 13 goals and five assists in the Premier League, making him the leading scorer during the calendar year.
Saudi Pro League forward Ivan Toney and Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins have also been left out. Dean Henderson, Ben White and Dan Burn are unavailable because of injury, while Reece James is also expected to miss the fixtures.
England will begin their Nations League campaign at home against Spain on September 26, with the visitors arriving as the reigning world champions and European champions.
Tuchel’s team will also play Czechia twice, away and at home, with an away fixture against Croatia scheduled between the two meetings.
