Portugal proposes friendly with Super Eagles

Portugal have proposed an international friendly against Nigeria’s Super Eagles as part of preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, according to Completesports.com.

The friendly is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, June 6, with Lisbon expected to host the encounter.

Both the Portuguese and Nigerian football federations have reached an agreement in principle for the match, with final details yet to be concluded.

Although the Super Eagles did not secure qualification for the 2026 World Cup, their strong showing at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco has attracted attention.

Nigeria’s impressive performance under head coach Eric Chelle has made the team an appealing opponent for nations heading to the World Cup.

The proposed match is expected to form part of Portugal’s build-up to the tournament, while Nigeria will use the fixture to prepare for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

The last time the two sides met was in a friendly in November 2022, when Portugal recorded a 4–0 victory.

Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes scored twice in that game, with Gonçalo Ramos and João Mário also getting on the scoresheet.
