Rayo Vallecano’s historic run to the UEFA Europa Conference League final has delivered a major boost for Spain in the race for additional UEFA Champions League places next season.
By reaching the final for the first time in their history, the Madrid-based club helped Spain improve its UEFA coefficient ranking, officially earning an extra Champions League slot for the 2026/27 campaign. As a result, fifth place in La Liga will now qualify directly for Europe’s elite competition, intensifying the fight for qualification.
At present, Real Betis sit in fifth place, holding a six-point advantage over Celta Vigo with only a few games remaining.
Rayo secured their place in the Conference League final after a 1-0 away win over RC Strasbourg Alsace, completing a 2-0 aggregate victory. Brazilian striker Alexandre Alemao once again made the difference, scoring the decisive goal after also finding the net in the first leg in Madrid.
The team, managed by Iñigo Pérez, will now face Crystal Palace in the final in Leipzig later this month as they chase their first major European trophy.
The second-leg clash in France saw Rayo dominate long spells, with goalkeeper Augusto Batalla producing a crucial stoppage-time penalty save from Julio Enciso after a handball by captain Óscar Valentín, preserving their aggregate lead and sealing celebrations among travelling fans.
Strasbourg, backed by the BlueCo ownership group linked to Chelsea, were hampered by injuries to attacking players Joaquín Panichelli and Emmanuel Emegha.
Although both Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid fell short in this season’s Champions League, Rayo’s unexpected European surge ensures Madrid still has representation in a continental final — and, more significantly, has reshaped Spain’s Champions League qualification landscape.
