Reach your full potential or risk regret, Tuchel warns Rashford

England manager Thomas Tuchel has issued a clear message to Marcus Rashford, cautioning the forward to deliver consistently at the top level or risk looking back on his career with regret.

As reported by Sky Sports on Tuesday, Tuchel acknowledged Rashford’s natural ability and sharp finishing but stressed that talent alone is insufficient in elite football.

He believes Rashford has what it takes to become one of the best forwards globally but fears that the Barcelona loanee could fail to maximise his abilities.

The England head coach revealed that he maintains regular conversations with Rashford, reminding him of the need to increase his goal contributions and creativity, warning that he may look back with disappointment in the later stages of his career if he does not push himself further.

Rashford has so far registered three goals and four assists in 10 appearances for the Spanish club following his temporary move from Manchester United this summer.

Tuchel highlighted, “He can be one of the best in the world because of the finishing and the quality. I think he still has to make these decisions. He is still young enough to make these decisions, because otherwise, he might be disappointed in 10 years with what he could have been and what he may have done.

“That is the headline for him, to keep pushing himself to the limit. And the limit for him is very, very high, maybe higher than it is for others.

“He has this potential. But potential is a dangerous word with high-level sports, because you have to reach your personal best regularly – that is demanded on this kind of level, and that is the challenge for him. It is not a question of talent.

“It is a question of whether he can prove the point at the club and international level; this is his task. If he starts fast or if he comes off the bench, he has to constantly prove himself.”

Rashford has been included in all but one of Tuchel’s squad selections since the manager took charge in March, with only the summer fixtures against Senegal and Andorra missed due to an injury sustained at the end of the 2024/25 season during his loan spell at Aston Villa.
