Newcastle forward Yoane Wissa has revealed that the Democratic Republic of Congo was justified in excluding him from its squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
Wissa was left out of the team despite the fact that he has been sidelined for much of the current campaign because of injury, with the tournament set to take place in Morocco.
The 29-year-old completed a £55 million move to Newcastle from Brentford on the final day of the summer transfer window in September. However, he subsequently suffered a knee injury while on international duty with DR Congo.
Speaking to Foot RDC, Wissa admitted that he is currently “not in the best shape” to feature for DR Congo at this month’s Africa Cup of Nations.
“I’m not in the best shape to represent my country right now. It’s a very difficult decision to make,” Wissa told Foot RDC.
“The DRC holds a special place in my heart. I can only wish my team-mates the best of luck in this AFCON. The most important thing now is to get back in shape so I can help the team during the play-offs in March.”
