Romero handed extra one-match ban for Liverpool red card

Tottenham captain Cristian Romero has received an extra one-match suspension and a £50,000 fine for his conduct during Tottenham’s 2-1 defeat to Liverpool last month.

Romero admitted to a Football Association charge of “acting improperly by failing to leave the field of play promptly” after being sent off in the 93rd minute on 20 December. The Argentine defender had received a second yellow card for kicking out at Liverpool’s Ibrahima Konate following a foul, having already been booked in the 66th minute for dissent. He was also accused of behaving in a “confrontational and/or aggressive manner towards the referee.”

An independent regulatory commission has now imposed the additional one-match ban and fine. Romero had already served the automatic suspension triggered by his red card, missing Spurs’ 1-0 victory over Crystal Palace on 28 December. Previously, he had been suspended for Spurs’ 2-1 defeat by Fulham on 29 November due to yellow card accumulation.

The FA said it will publish the written reasons for the latest sanctions in due course.
