Rutter delivers late blow to Spurs’ survival hopes against Brighton

Georginio Rutter struck deep into stoppage time to earn Brighton & Hove Albion a dramatic 2-2 draw and keep Tottenham Hotspur stuck in the Premier League relegation zone.

Spurs appeared on course to climb out of the bottom three after twice taking the lead, but were undone by late goals in both halves against Roberto De Zerbi’s side.

The hosts started brightly and went ahead in the 39th minute when Pedro Porro finished off a clever assist from Xavi Simons. However, Kaoru Mitoma equalised just before the break with a stunning volley.

In the second half, Spurs pushed forward and regained the lead through a deflected effort from Simons in the 77th minute after a turnover by Lucas Bergvall.

But Brighton had the final say. Jan Paul van Hecke won possession late on and set up Rutter, who fired home emphatically to snatch a crucial point.

The result leaves Tottenham in deep trouble, with their relegation fears growing. They are now winless in 15 Premier League matches, their worst run in the competition, and have failed to hold onto leads in their last five games.

Brighton, meanwhile, continue to benefit from their bench strength, with substitutes contributing heavily to their goals this season—matching Arsenal for the most in the league.
