Aston Villa secured qualification for the Europa League last 16 with a hard-fought 1-0 victory away at Fenerbahce in a thrilling encounter.
Jadon Sancho’s first-half header proved decisive, though the winger had chances to extend the lead, while goalkeeper Marco Bizot produced several outstanding saves to keep Villa in control. At both ends, celebrations were cut short as VAR intervened to rule out goals.
The most dramatic moment came in the 75th minute when Kerem Akturkoglu appeared to have equalised, sparking wild celebrations among the home supporters. However, the goal was disallowed for offside in the build-up involving former Villa forward Jhon Duran. The decision leaves Fenerbahce heading into the play-offs.
Villa, however, avoided the extra fixtures. They sit level on points at the top of the standings with Lyon, who also won their penultimate match, and have already secured a top-eight finish ahead of their final league-phase clash at home against RB Salzburg next week.
The win marked Villa’s sixth victory in seven Europa League matches this season and was a fitting way for Unai Emery to celebrate his 100th game in charge in the competition, keeping his hopes of a fifth Europa League title firmly alive.
Despite the result, the match could have been more comfortable, as Sancho squandered good chances either side of the interval. Villa endured nervous moments late on, with Bizot alert to deny substitute Talisca on several occasions.
Tensions also flared in the heated atmosphere at Fenerbahce’s stadium, with Emery clashing briefly with Youri Tielemans after substituting the midfielder late on.
Nevertheless, Villa will take pride in their response to last weekend’s Premier League defeat to Everton, taking a significant step forward in their European campaign.
