South African police arrest two suspects over murder of boxing champion Zolani Tete

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has arrested two suspects in connection with the murder of former world boxing champion Zolani Tete, who was shot dead in Mdantsane, Eastern Cape, on Friday night.

According to Channel Africa, SAPS confirmed that the two suspects, aged 30 and 22, were arrested in KuGompo on Saturday, August 22, following what police described as a swift, intelligence-led operation involving several law enforcement agencies.

The suspects are being questioned over Tete’s murder and the attempted murder of a 27-year-old woman who was also injured in the shooting.

SAPS spokesperson Nobuntu Gantana said Tete had just arrived at a residence in NU17, Mdantsane, when two armed men wearing balaclavas emerged from a vehicle and opened fire.

Tete, 38, died at the scene, while the woman sustained injuries during the attack.

Police said further arrests were expected as investigators continued to follow several leads.

“Due to the sensitive nature of the ongoing investigation, the SAPS is unable to disclose further details regarding the motive or the circumstances surrounding the arrests at this time,” the police said in a statement.

SAPS urged members of the public and the media to avoid speculation and refrain from sharing unverified information that could jeopardise the investigation or subsequent court proceedings.
