Southampton dump Arsenal out of FA Cup

Arsenal, still smarting from their EFL Cup final defeat, were knocked out of the FA Cup quarter-finals as Shea Charles scored the late winner for Southampton.

The Championship side went into halftime leading after Ross Stewart’s close-range finish. Arsenal looked set for extra time when Viktor Gyokeres equalised, but the Gunners never settled defensively. The loss of Gabriel Magalhaes to a knee injury left them vulnerable, and Southampton substitute Charles struck in the 85th minute to seal a famous victory, ending Arsenal’s treble hopes.

Early chances came from Leo Scienza and Martinelli, but Southampton took control after Ben White’s defensive error allowed Stewart to score. Southampton came close to doubling their lead before Arsenal drew level through Gyokeres in the 68th minute. Ultimately, Charles’ decisive strike secured the Saints’ historic win.

Despite dominating in shots (23-8) and expected goals (xG 1.77-1.21), Arsenal’s lack of penetration proved costly. Southampton, now the first non-top-tier side since 1975-76 to eliminate two Premier League teams in a single FA Cup campaign, wore a commemorative yellow and blue kit celebrating their only previous FA Cup triumph.
