Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso believes Cole Palmer is a “special talent” and expects the England midfielder to play a pivotal role for the Blues during the 2026-27 campaign.
Palmer enjoyed an outstanding debut season after joining Chelsea from Manchester City in 2023, scoring 22 Premier League goals and providing 11 assists.
Since arriving at Stamford Bridge, the 24-year-old has recorded 54 goals and 31 assists in 131 appearances, helping Chelsea win the FIFA Club World Cup and the UEFA Conference League.
His Premier League output has also been among the league’s best, with 67 goal involvements (47 goals, 20 assists) since his move—trailing only Erling Haaland, Mohamed Salah and Ollie Watkins during that period.
Last season, however, Palmer’s progress was disrupted by injuries. He scored 10 league goals, registered one assist, made just four UEFA Champions League appearances, and missed out on England’s World Cup squad.
Despite those setbacks, Alonso is confident Palmer will return to his best after being impressed by his attitude in pre-season training.
“From the first day, you can see he is a special talent, a special player. You notice his quality and how he wants to play, making the right decision in the right spot.”
The Chelsea manager added:
“I’m happy that he has come in a good mood, with a good mindset to have a great season. We are really looking forward to getting the best out of him.”
Alonso believes Palmer can become the focal point of Chelsea’s attack if the team develops greater balance and consistency.
“If we are able to build a strong team with proper stability around the key players, then for sure he will be a key player in the attacking part.”
