Arsenal secured their first European knockout victory on Portuguese soil on their seventh try, as an injury-time strike from Kai Havertz handed the Gunners a 1-0 win over Sporting CP in their UEFA Champions League quarter-final clash at the Estadio Jose Alvalade.
Match report
Following a cautious start from both teams, Maxi Araújo unleashed a powerful left-footed effort towards goal, which David Raya somehow tipped onto the crossbar. It took another 10 minutes before Arsenal threatened even slightly, with former Sporting forward Viktor Gyökeres comfortably kept away from danger. Noni Madueke, stepping in for the injured Bukayo Saka, then rattled the bar with an attempt to score an Olympic goal directly from a corner for the visitors.
Sporting were content to drop into a back five whenever Arsenal pushed forward, disrupting the North London side’s rhythm. Still, as the half wore on, the hosts failed to involve their key attacker, Luis Suárez, and overall managed just three touches inside the Gunners’ penalty area. By HT, neither side had truly taken control, although Arsenal would likely have felt more frustrated after failing to capitalize on nine crosses into the box.
After the interval, the match resumed in a similar fashion, with Declan Rice especially effective at cutting out Sporting’s attacks early. Martin Ødegaard’s lofted free-kick kept Rui Silva alert, while Trincão’s low shot forced Raya into action. Shortly after the hour, Martin Zubimendi appeared to have put Arsenal ahead with a curling strike from distance, only for it to be disallowed for offside. Rice continued to stand out, regaining possession 13 times. With seven minutes remaining, Raya once again rescued Arsenal with an outstanding one-handed save from Geny Catamo’s clever header.
With just two minutes of injury-time remaining, Havertz chose the perfect moment to quiet the crowd, finishing low to secure the win for the Gunners. The outcome leaves the Portuguese side still without a victory in eight matches against Arsenal (D4, L4), though their ability to contain the visitors for much of the game will give them confidence ahead of the return leg at the Emirates Stadium.
