Spurs board ties, not relegation, will decide his future – De Zerbi

Roberto De Zerbi has made it clear that his long-term future at Tottenham will depend on his relationship with the club’s board and their shared vision, rather than whether the team is relegated from the Premier League.

Speaking after Spurs’ difficult start under his tenure, he insisted that staying in the top flight is not the key issue. He stressed alignment within the club, saying: “The problem is not the league. The problem is to keep the relationship with the board and to have the same ideas in the project,”

When asked to clarify if the division Spurs play in does not matter, he replied: “Yes. Everyone on the same page.”

Spurs remain in the relegation zone after a 1-0 defeat to Sunderland, leaving them two points from safety with six matches left and still winless in 2026.

De Zerbi also admitted the priority now is unity and understanding his squad, adding: “I have to get to know my players better and better every week,” and “We have no time to lose. We have no time to understand the problems we have this season. We have to be focused just on the next game. Transfer confidence.”

He further emphasized mentality and leadership within the team: “We have to feel everyone’s responsibility in this situation. And we can’t cry. We have to push to get out of this situation.”

With captain Cristian Romero ruled out for the season, De Zerbi highlighted the need for new leaders to step up, naming players such as Micky van de Ven, Rodrigo Bentancur, and João Palhinha as potential influences within the squad.
