The Super Eagles of Nigeria have risen three places from 41st to 38th in the latest global rankings released by FIFA.
Despite this advancement, the three-time African champions remain in fifth place on the continent, according to the update published on Wednesday by the world football authority.
Nigeria’s improved standing comes even after failing to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, having lost to DR Congo on penalties in the final round of the African playoffs over the weekend.
Before that defeat, the Eagles secured a 4-1 extra-time victory over Gabon in the semi-final stage of the playoffs.
In the newest FIFA rankings, Morocco, Senegal, Egypt, and Algeria maintained their respective positions as Africa’s top four teams. Tunisia, Cote d’Ivoire, and Mali follow in sixth, seventh, and eighth positions, while DR Congo and Cameroon round out the continent’s top ten.
Globally, Spain holds on to the number one spot, with Argentina, France, and England staying in second, third, and fourth positions. Brazil has moved ahead of Portugal to claim fifth place in the world.
The next FIFA world ranking update is scheduled for early 2026.
