Super Eagles to rely on smart rotation against Uganda — Chelle

Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has said that smart squad rotation, rather than overconfidence, will determine the outcome of Nigeria’s final Group C fixture against Uganda.

Addressing journalists at a pre-match press briefing on Monday, Chelle explained that success at the Africa Cup of Nations is built on effective use of the entire squad and proper timing, not reliance on a fixed lineup.

He noted that AFCON tournaments are won by collective effort, pointing out that even players introduced late in games can make decisive contributions.

According to Chelle, his tactical approach changes from match to match, with the final group encounter focused on maintaining balance while preparing for the knockout rounds.

He explained that while the opening game emphasizes intensity and the second focuses on strategy, the third is centered on managing players wisely, stressing the need to win while also positioning the team well for the next stage.

Chelle also acknowledged the constant pressure that comes with managing the Super Eagles, describing it as a demanding role shaped by the country’s high expectations.

He said accepting the job brought increased responsibility and constant pressure, which motivates him to deliver success for the team.

The coach took time to celebrate striker Victor Osimhen on his birthday, describing him as one of the world’s top forwards and expressing hope that the tournament would be memorable for him.

Team captain Wilfred Ndidi also spoke, saying the squad remains fully focused despite already securing qualification for the next round.

Ndidi said the team’s positive atmosphere has not affected their concentration, adding that their attention is firmly on the upcoming match.

Reflecting on scoring his first goal for Nigeria, Ndidi described it as a meaningful moment and explained that his celebration was a tribute to his father and Nigerian football legend Kanu Nwankwo, inspired by wearing Kanu’s former number four jersey.

Nigeria, who have already sealed a place in the Round of 16, top Group C after two victories and will face Uganda on Tuesday at the Complex Sportif de Fès.

The Super Eagles are aiming to sustain their momentum and maintain discipline as they head into the knockout phase.
