Super Falcons visit injured South African player in hospital

Several members of Nigeria’s Super Falcons visited South African forward Gabriela Salgado in hospital after she suffered a serious leg injury during the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) semi-final clash between both teams in Morocco.

Salgado was stretchered off in the 88th minute of Tuesday’s tense encounter, which Nigeria won 2–1 courtesy of a late goal from Gloria Alozie. The injury was later confirmed to be a mid-shaft fracture of her left leg.

The South African Football Association reported that Salgado has since undergone successful surgery at the Mohamed VI University Hospital in Casablanca. She is expected to miss the rest of the year as she recovers.

The distressing incident left players from both sides visibly shaken as medics attended to Salgado on the pitch.

On Wednesday, Super Falcons captain Rasheedat Ajibade led a delegation of Nigerian players to visit Salgado in hospital. The team presented her with a signed jersey and a heartfelt note expressing their support.

The message read:
“The entire Super Falcons of Nigeria family—players, coaches, and staff—were deeply saddened to learn of Gabriela Salgado’s injury during Tuesday’s match.

“Our thoughts are with her for comfort, care, and recovery. We hold Gabriela, her teammates, family, and close friends in our hearts, sending our sincerest wishes for strength and healing.

“In such moments, the spirit of competition fades, replaced by unity and concern for a fellow athlete.

“As members of the global football community, the Super Falcons stand in solidarity with Banyana Banyana. We wish Gabriela a smooth recovery and hope to see her return to the pitch stronger and surrounded by the support of her team and community.”

Nigeria will face host nation Morocco in the WAFCON final on Saturday as they aim to secure a record-extending 10th continental title.
