Tems makes history as first African singer to perform at Club World Cup final

Temilade Openiyi, better known as Tems, has made history once again by becoming the first African artist to headline the FIFA Club World Cup final halftime show.

The groundbreaking performance took place on Sunday during the much-anticipated final between Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain, which ended in a 3-0 victory for Chelsea.

Tems was earlier announced as the headline performer by FIFA and Global Citizen, co-organisers of the event — a revelation that sparked widespread excitement among football and music fans globally.

With her signature poise and magnetic stage presence, Tems delivered an unforgettable set, performing fan favourites such as Essence, Free Mind, and tracks from her latest critically acclaimed album, Born in the Wild.

By taking the FIFA stage, Tems joins the ranks of global superstars like Shakira and Jennifer Lopez, further cementing her place on the international music scene.

Tems rose to prominence in 2020 through her collaboration with Wizkid on the hit single Essence. She won her first Grammy in 2023 for her contribution to Future’s Wait For U, featuring Drake, and added a second in 2025, taking home the Best African Performance award.

With this milestone, Tems continues to break new ground, showcasing the global reach and impact of African music.
