Ten-man Madagascar stunned Sudan 1-0 after extra time in Dar es Salaam on Wednesday to secure their first-ever African Nations Championship (CHAN) final spot.
The Barea, who finished third in their only previous appearance three years ago, will face Morocco in Saturday’s final in Nairobi. Morocco edged Senegal 5-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in Kampala.
Madagascar dominated early possession but failed to score before half-time. Sudan then threatened after the break, with Walieldin Khidir missing a golden chance in the 53rd minute. Their hopes rose further when Madagascar’s Fenohasina Razafimaro was dismissed in the 79th minute for a second booking.
Sudan pushed hard with the extra man but could not break through, forcing extra time. Just as the match seemed destined for penalties, substitute Toky Rakotondraibe struck in the 116th minute, firing past Mohamed Abooja to seal a dramatic victory.
“Our strength lies in unity,” said Madagascar coach Romuald Rakotondrabe. “The players believed until the end, and this victory belongs to them and to Madagascar.”
Morocco, seeking a third CHAN title in seven years, advanced after a tense shoot-out against defending champions Senegal. Joseph Layousse gave Senegal the lead before Sabir Bougrine equalised with a thunderous strike.
Senegal’s captain Seyni N’Diaye missed the opening penalty, while Morocco converted all five to reach another final.
“It was a tough match, but the players showed composure,” Morocco coach Tarik Sektioui said. “We’ve fought hard to get here, and now we want to win the trophy again.”
The final in Nairobi promises to be a historic clash between debutants Madagascar and seasoned champions Morocco.
