Bayern Munich returned to winning ways in the UEFA Champions League with a convincing 2-0 victory over Atletico Madrid at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano on Tuesday night.
Teenage sensation Lennart Karl opened the scoring in the 54th minute after capitalising on a defensive mistake by Robin Le Normand, cleverly lifting the ball over goalkeeper Jan Oblak.
Konrad Laimer doubled Bayern’s advantage in the 74th minute, firing a powerful finish into the net after being set up by Harry Kane.
Atletico had some promising opportunities in the first half, with Julian Alvarez and Pablo Barrios coming close, but Bayern gradually took control of proceedings.
The visitors also threatened through Dayot Upamecano, whose effort struck the crossbar before Laimer eventually secured the victory.
Kane, who was aiming to match Cristiano Ronaldo’s record of scoring in 11 consecutive Champions League appearances, failed to find the net but registered an assist.
Karl’s goal was his fifth in the Champions League, making him one of Bayern’s most prolific teenage scorers in the competition.
Bayern dominated the second half, finishing with 19 shots compared to Atletico’s nine and a superior expected goals (xG) figure of 1.77 to 0.83.
The victory moves Bayern into the Champions League top eight, while Atletico Madrid remain 21st in the standings.
