UCL: Liverpool stage stunning comeback to beat Villarreal as Wirtz scores

Liverpool produced another dramatic Champions League comeback at Anfield, recovering from a two-goal deficit to defeat Villarreal 4-3 and maintain their perfect record in Europe this season.

Florian Wirtz scored his first goal of the season to extend Liverpool’s lead, despite an earlier costly mistake from Virgil van Dijk that gifted Villarreal a shock opener.

Match Report

Liverpool found themselves in trouble early on after Van Dijk’s poor header back towards Alisson was intercepted by Georges Mikautadze, who calmly finished from a tight angle to give Villarreal the lead in the fourth minute.

The visitors doubled their advantage in the 29th minute when Nathan Saliba played a precise pass through Liverpool’s defence, allowing Sergi Cardona to race through and slot the ball into the bottom-left corner.

However, Liverpool responded through Alexis Mac Allister, who headed home Kostas Tsimikas’ in-swinging corner to reduce the deficit. The Argentine nearly added another moments later but sent his effort narrowly wide.

Liverpool completed their first-half comeback just before the interval. Rio Ngumoha delivered a dangerous ball into the penalty area, and Ronald Araujo arrived at the far post to head past former Liverpool goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi, making it 2-2.

The hosts continued to apply pressure after the restart, with Cody Gakpo and Wirtz testing Gulacsi before Trey Nyoni fired narrowly wide of the right post.

Liverpool finally took the lead shortly after the hour mark. Ngumoha once again troubled Villarreal’s defence before delivering an accurate cross for Mac Allister, who finished emphatically off the crossbar to score his second goal of the match and put the Reds ahead 3-2.

Wirtz then extended Liverpool’s advantage in the 68th minute, finding the bottom-right corner with a composed left-footed finish to register his first goal of the season and strengthen the home side’s position.

Villarreal refused to give up, however, as Tani Oluwaseyi converted Ayoze Perez’s delivery to make it 4-3 and set up a tense finish.

Liverpool held on through the closing stages to secure all three points, recording their third consecutive victory in the Champions League this season.

Anfield Magic Strikes Again

Liverpool’s comeback continued the club’s remarkable history of recovering from difficult positions in European competition at Anfield.

Before the match, Andoni Iraola had emphasised the importance of building a winning atmosphere at home. His side appeared to be heading for a memorable result after taking a two-goal lead, but Liverpool’s resilience ultimately proved decisive.

Cardona’s goal in the 29th minute marked the earliest Liverpool had trailed by two goals in a major European home match since their April 2016 encounter with Borussia Dortmund, when they fell 2-0 behind after just eight minutes.

On previous occasions when Liverpool had gone two goals down early in a major European match at Anfield, they had recovered to win against Club Brugge in 1976, Sion in 1996 and Dortmund in 2016. The latest victory added another chapter to that remarkable history.

Ngumoha and Mac Allister were central to the comeback, with the young winger repeatedly causing problems for Villarreal’s defence and the Argentine delivering two crucial goals.

At 18 years and 52 days old, Ngumoha became the third-youngest player to register multiple assists in a Champions League match, behind Warren Zaire-Emery and Theo Walcott.

He also completed seven of his eight dribbles, underlining his influence on Liverpool’s attacking performance.

Mac Allister, meanwhile, continued his impressive European record at Anfield. All eight of his Champions League goals have come at the stadium, including his strike against Atletico Madrid on matchday one this season.

Despite the defeat, Villarreal created several opportunities and finished with an expected goals (xG) total of 2.37 from 22 shots, compared with Liverpool’s 1.58 from 14 attempts.

Iraola will now turn his attention to the upcoming Premier League clash against Brighton, while Liverpool will take confidence from another remarkable European night at Anfield.
