Benfica head coach Jose Mourinho has hailed Ukrainian goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin’s dramatic late goal against Real Madrid as a moment for the history books.
The Portuguese side appeared set for Champions League elimination even though they were leading 3-2 as stoppage time ticked away. However, Trubin surged forward for a free kick in the dying seconds and scored the decisive goal that secured Benfica’s progression to the playoff round on goal difference, knocking out their high-profile opponents.
Real Madrid had been aiming for a top-eight finish, but their total of 15 points from eight matches proved insufficient, leaving them ninth in the standings. The Spanish giants also ended the contest with nine players after Raul Asencio and Rodrygo were shown red cards.
Speaking after the match in an interview with Movistar Plus, Mourinho said Trubin’s contribution was extraordinary and decisive.
“I knew we weren’t through yet, that 3-2 wasn’t enough, and we were lucky with a set piece,” Mourinho said.
“Our goalkeeper Trubin, who is two metres tall, went into the box and scored a fantastic goal, a historic goal … It felt like the stadium was going to collapse. Incredible.”
Benfica goalkeeper Trubin came up from his goal in the 90+8th minute to join a set piece and scored a beautiful header. One of the most beautiful moments in football. ❤️⚽️ pic.twitter.com/mGsTPIWjkG
