Valverde hat-trick fires Madrid past Man City in UCL clash

Federico Valverde delivered a stunning first-half hat-trick to inspire Real Madrid to a commanding 3-0 victory over Manchester City in their Champions League last-16 first-leg clash.

Valverde struck three times within 22 minutes at Santiago Bernabeu Stadium to hand Madrid firm control of the tie, despite the absence of injured star Kylian Mbappe.

City started brightly and dominated the opening exchanges, but Madrid took the lead against the run of play. A long clearance from goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois caught Nico O’Reilly off guard, allowing Valverde to round Gianluigi Donnarumma before calmly slotting the ball into the net.

Seven minutes later, the Madrid midfielder doubled the advantage. A deflected pass from Vinicius Junior fell perfectly into Valverde’s path, and he drilled a powerful left-footed shot beyond Donnarumma.

Valverde completed his memorable hat-trick shortly after, finishing a clever lob from former City midfielder Brahim Diaz. He controlled the ball brilliantly, lifted it over Marc Guehi and volleyed home from close range.

Madrid nearly extended their lead early in the second half when Vinicius won a penalty after being fouled by Donnarumma, but the Brazilian’s spot-kick was saved by the Italian goalkeeper.

City pushed for a way back into the game, but solid defending and key saves from Courtois — who recovered well after an earlier mistake from youngster Thiago Pitarch, the youngest Spanish player to start a Madrid Champions League knockout match — kept the visitors scoreless.

Valverde’s performance placed him in elite company. He became only the second player to score a first-half hat-trick against an English club in the Champions League, matching the feat achieved by Lionel Messi for FC Barcelona against Arsenal FC in April 2010.

Remarkably, the three goals also matched the total number Valverde had scored in his previous 75 appearances in the competition.

Operating from the right flank, the Uruguayan dominated the match, leading Madrid in chances created (two), dribbles (seven), completed dribbles (four), duels contested (17) and duels won (11).

Despite enjoying nearly 60 percent possession, City struggled to create clear chances, producing opportunities worth only 0.56 expected goals. Madrid, meanwhile, were deadly on the counterattack, generating 12 shots — seven on target — with a combined expected goals value of 2.59.
