We gave Manchester United no clear scoring chances – Yakirovich

Hull City manager Sergei Yakirovich praised his side’s intensity, defensive organisation and set-piece execution after the newly promoted team stunned Manchester United 2-0 in their Premier League opener.

Yakirovich said he was “very proud” of the performance, acknowledging that Hull expected to have less possession but successfully stayed compact and pressed high. He also highlighted the team’s two set-piece goals, noting that they had worked on those routines throughout the week.

The victory marked Hull’s first league win over Manchester United in 52 years, a record Yakirovich admitted he was unaware of before the match.

He also praised Hull’s new signings, including goalkeeper and goalscorer Noël Mendy, for their concentration and contribution to the clean sheet, while admitting the squad still needs time to build chemistry.

Looking ahead to the transfer window, Yakirovich revealed that the club expects to sign “three or four more players,” particularly attacking options who can provide pace and depth.

The manager believes the shock victory could also help Hull attract new players as they prepare for a difficult fight to avoid relegation.

“We know we will be fighting for survival. It will be very difficult because we still have 37 games to play,” he said, while describing the win as “a huge boost” for the newly promoted side.
