World Cup countdown: Davido uses performance to demand action over Oyo school abductions [VIDEO]

Afrobeats star Davido turned his appearance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup countdown concert in the United States into a strong advocacy moment, calling attention to the abduction of students and teachers in Oyo State’s Oriire Local Government Area.

The singer appeared on stage in a custom-designed outfit symbolising solidarity with the victims. He wore a white T-shirt inscribed “NIGERIA” under a black leather jacket, which had the words “BRING THEM HOME” prominently displayed on the back. The jacket was also fitted with green circular buttons bearing the names of the kidnapped individuals.

A distinction was made in the design: names of those still held captive were written in white, while those confirmed dead were marked in red.

Through the gesture, Davido used his global platform to draw attention to Nigeria’s security challenges and amplify calls for urgent intervention.

Before performing, he spoke emotionally about the situation, urging faster government response and offering prayers for the victims and their families. He said: “Peace and love everywhere. May God be with the families of the abducted and the ones who have been killed,” adding, “They still haven’t been rescued; we’re praying to God every day. We’re also praying to God that the government hastens, and you know… My country is going through a lot. We represent everywhere we go.”
