World Cup: Ghana appeals Canada’s decision to exclude Partey from tournament

According to Ghanaian media citing the Ghanaian Ministry of Sports, Ghana’s Minister of Sports has officially filed a complaint with Canada and requested a review of the decision after Canadian authorities denied a visa to Ghana’s key midfielder, Partey.

Partey was refused entry because of sexual assault allegations from 2025, causing him to miss Ghana’s group-stage match against Panama. He was stopped upon arrival when the Ghanaian team traveled from Boston to Canada for tournament preparations. Canadian authorities stated that he is currently facing multiple rape and sexual assault charges.

Ghana’s Minister of Sports, Kofi Adams, strongly criticized the decision, arguing that Canada’s actions contravene international rules and stressing that Partey should not be regarded as guilty until proven guilty. He has formally asked Canada, through official channels, to reconsider the decision.

At present, Partey remains eligible to feature in group-stage matches played in the United States. However, if the restriction is not lifted, he could be prevented from playing again should Ghana progress to the knockout rounds, which are scheduled to take place in Canada.
