World cup qualifiers: D’Tigers fall to second straight loss

D’Tigers fell to their second straight defeat in the 2027 FIBA World Cup qualifiers, losing 68–55 to Guinea in their second outing on Saturday at the Salle Multidisciplinaire de Radès in Tunisia.

Guinea controlled the match throughout, outperforming Nigeria in what proved to be a largely one-sided affair.

The loss follows D’Tigers’ opening-day defeat to hosts Tunisia on Thursday.

Nigeria trailed 22–16 after the first quarter and failed to gain momentum in the second, going into the break behind 35–26.

Although D’Tigers showed brief improvement in the third quarter, Guinea maintained their grip on the contest and widened the gap in the final quarter to secure a comfortable 13-point victory.

Nigeria will take on Rwanda on Sunday in their last game of the opening phase of the first round of qualifiers.

Each team in the group will clash again in the second phase, after which the top three nations will progress to the final qualification stage.

In the end, only five African teams will earn places at the 2027 FIBA World Cup in Qatar, set to run from August 27 to September 12.
