For many Nigerians, checking online reviews has become part of shopping. Before buying a phone, clothes, electronics or booking a hotel, people often read what previous customers have said.
A product with hundreds of positive reviews can quickly attract buyers. But not every review online is genuine.
Fake reviews are comments or ratings posted by people who may not have bought or used the product. Some businesses may pay people to praise their products, while fake accounts can also be used to make a business appear more popular than it is.
The problem is that many buyers do not discover the truth until after they have spent their money.
A customer may see comments describing a product as “perfect” or “original”, only to receive something that looks completely different from the pictures or does not work as expected.
Social media has made the issue more noticeable. Many Nigerians now discover products on TikTok, Instagram and Facebook, where positive comments can make a product appear trustworthy within minutes.
Technology has also made it easier to produce convincing content, making some fake reviews harder to identify.
Consumers are therefore advised not to depend only on star ratings. They should read both positive and negative comments, look for detailed reviews, check customer photos and compare feedback across different platforms.
A review that simply says “nice product” may not tell a buyer much. Genuine reviews often contain details about the quality, delivery and actual experience of using the product.
Online platforms also have a responsibility to detect and remove fake reviews to protect consumers and honest businesses.
As online shopping continues to grow, trust will remain important. For buyers, the simple lesson is this: do not let five stars make the decision for you. Read carefully before you spend your money.
