Phone sellers at markets such as Computer Village in Lagos say more customers now ask if a phone supports eSIM before buying it. They say business owners, professionals and people who travel often like the feature because it allows them to use more than one phone number on the same device.
Many users say the biggest advantage is convenience. They can switch between phone lines without removing a SIM card or carrying two phones. This makes it easier to keep personal and business numbers on one device.
Security is another reason why people are choosing eSIM phones. If a phone is stolen, a thief can remove a physical SIM card to stop calls and make it harder to track the device. Since an eSIM is built into the phone, it cannot be removed, making it more difficult for thieves to disable the line.
Many Nigerians also believe buying an eSIM-compatible phone is a good investment because more smartphone makers are adding the feature to their latest devices.
However, eSIM is still new to many people. Most affordable smartphones do not support it yet, and many users do not know how it works or where they can activate it.
Technology experts say more Nigerians are expected to start using eSIM as awareness grows and more network providers expand the service.
