You send someone a WhatsApp message and get no response. A few minutes later, you notice they were recently active.
For many users, this immediately raises the question: If they were on WhatsApp, why didn’t they reply?
The “last seen” feature is one of the simplest but most closely watched features on the messaging platform. It shows the most recent time WhatsApp recorded a user as active, depending on their privacy settings.
However, the timestamp does not tell you exactly what the person was doing.
They could have opened WhatsApp to check another conversation, viewed a status, sent a message or simply checked something before leaving the app.
It is also important to distinguish between “online” and “last seen.” Being online generally indicates that a person is currently using WhatsApp, while last seen refers to their previous activity.
If you cannot see someone’s last seen, it does not automatically mean you have been blocked. The person may have adjusted their privacy settings to limit who can view the information.
The feature also does not allow anyone to track what a person is doing on their phone. It cannot show which other apps they are using, where they are or who they are talking to outside WhatsApp.
For this reason, seeing a recent last-seen time should not automatically be interpreted as proof that someone deliberately ignored a message.
The technology can show when someone was active on WhatsApp, but it cannot explain why they were there.
