The Niger Delta Development Commission has renewed its dedication to aiding local educational establishments, promising to construct new hostel blocks and supply the University of Port Harcourt with alternate power supply.

When members of UNIPORT’s Governing Council, led by Chairman Senator Mao Ohuabunwa, visited the Commission’s offices in Port Harcourt, NDDC Managing Director Dr. Samuel Ogbuku informed them of this.

Seledi Thompson-Wakama, the Director of Corporate Affairs for the NDDC, made this announcement in a statement on Wednesday.

In order to promote mutual development, Ogbuku emphasised the Commission’s readiness to work with UNIPORT and other organisations.

“We have undertaken several projects at the University of Port Harcourt, and we look forward to building more partnerships. Let us work together so the region can benefit,” he said.

He assured the delegation that the Commission would construct new hostel blocks and provide the university’s Senate building with a 300 KVA solar inverter system to reduce diesel expenses.

Additionally, Ogbuku announced plans to deploy engineers to assess the university’s roads and hostels for possible rehabilitation.

“In NDDC, we believe in action. We do not make empty promises. We are determined to bring President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda to reality,” he stated.

As the Commission marks its 25th anniversary, he noted that the NDDC remains committed to driving development and fostering partnerships across the Niger Delta.

In his remarks, Ohuabunwa commended the NDDC’s efforts under its current leadership and urged continued support for UNIPORT.

He highlighted the university’s infrastructural challenges, noting that while its student population stood at 50,000, the hostel capacity was only 5,000.

Ohuabunwa appealed to the NDDC for assistance in electricity and transportation, requesting support in securing gas turbines to ensure a stable power supply for students.

The Vice-Chancellor of UNIPORT, Prof. Owunari Georgewill, thanked the NDDC for its interventions and congratulated Ogbuku on the commendation he recently received from President Tinubu.

Expressing optimism about future collaborations, Georgewill also invited the NDDC to participate in the university’s upcoming 50th-anniversary celebrations.
