Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has expressed optimism that former Governor James Ibori might eventually align with the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The governor made this comment on Tuesday during a vigil mass held at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in Otu-Jeremi, Ughelli South LGA, in memory of the late former Deputy Governor, Professor Amos Utuama.

Governor Oborevwori seized the moment to highlight the importance of unity among Urhobo political leaders.

Paying heartfelt tribute to the late Prof. Utuama, he remarked: “I’m glad to be present at this gathering, organised for one man whose life touched many. Today’s message speaks more to those of us still alive than to the departed.”

He recounted an act of generosity by Utuama, saying: “While serving as Deputy Governor, he was given a plot of land in Asaba. Rather than keep it, he gave it to the Catholic Church and even helped fund the construction. To me, that’s a lasting investment in heaven.”

Governor Oborevwori prayed that Utuama’s passing would serve as a rallying point for unity within Ughelli South and the wider Urhobo community.

Describing the late Professor as a purposeful individual, he stated: “He led a meaningful life and passed on with dignity.”

In his homily, the Catholic Bishop of Warri Diocese, Most Rev. Anthony Ewherido, also paid tribute to Utuama’s legacy, recognizing his contributions both to the Church and to public service.

Bishop Ewherido extended condolences to the bereaved family, urging them to uphold the late statesman’s virtues of humility, generosity, and devotion to God.

He reminded the congregation that death for a Christian signifies not an end, but a transition to eternal life, and called on everyone to embrace Christ during their lifetime.

The Bishop also emphasized the need for continued cooperation among political leaders to foster growth and unity in Delta State.

Speaking on behalf of the family, Ovie Utuama, son of the deceased, expressed gratitude to attendees for their support and requested prayers during their time of mourning.
