Detectives from the Homicide Section of the Lagos State Police Command have arrested the prime suspect in connection with the murder of 65-year-old Jane Okoye.

According to a statement released on Sunday by the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, the incident took place on  April 2, 2025 in the Orile Iganmu area of the state.

Hundeyin revealed that preliminary investigations indicated the suspect, Abubakar Iliyasu, unlawfully entered the victim’s residence and made off with her Toyota Sienna vehicle. The victim was discovered unconscious and was taken to a medical facility, where she sadly passed away.

He added: “Following the transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Yaba, for discreet and thorough enquiries, a team of homicide detectives immediately swung into action, utilising both intelligence and technical resources to apprehend the suspect and recover the stolen property.”

Thanks to their efforts, detectives successfully tracked Iliyasu—who had fled with the deceased’s vehicle and other belongings—to Ankpa, in Kogi State. He was subsequently arrested, and the vehicle recovered in good condition, now secured as evidence for the ongoing investigation.

At present, the suspect is being held at the SCID in Yaba, Lagos State, where he is cooperating with investigators.

In response to the development, Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, assured the public that the suspect would be charged to court upon the conclusion of the investigation.

He further stressed that the Lagos State Police Command remains committed to safeguarding lives and property throughout the state.
