The Flying Eagles have secured a place in the semi-finals of the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after defeating defending champions Senegal 3-1 on penalties.

Monday’s tense quarter-final at the Suez Canal Stadium in Egypt ended goalless after regulation and extra time, forcing the match into a penalty shootout. Nigeria held their nerve to advance, with spot-kicks from Precious Benjamin, Emmanuel Chukwu, and Israel Ayuma sealing the win.

Goalkeeper Ebenezer Harcourt emerged the hero, saving two of Senegal’s penalties. Pierre Dorival and Mame Mor Faye were denied, while Ousmane Konaté struck the crossbar. Although Seydi Diouck converted his attempt, it proved insufficient.

The victory also secured Nigeria a ticket to the FIFA U-20 World Cup, set to take place later this year in Chile.

Despite an unbeaten run in the group stage—accumulating five points—Nigeria’s performances drew criticism, particularly following a lacklustre draw with already-eliminated Kenya.

Coach Aliyu Zubairu praised his side’s resilience under pressure: “We prepared for all scenarios, including penalties. I’m proud of the boys for executing when it mattered most.”

Nigeria will now face either South Africa or DR Congo in the semi-final, as they edge closer to an eighth U-20 AFCON title.
