The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in Osun State has revealed plans to join forces with other opposition parties to defeat Governor Ademola Adeleke in the 2026 gubernatorial election.
Osun NNPP Chairman Tosin Odeyemi said in a statement on Tuesday that the party is prepared to back any deserving candidate, regardless of party affiliation, who has the capacity to win.
Odeyemi urged all opposition components to set aside their differences and support a consensus candidate with demonstrated integrity, pointing out that a unified opposition is necessary to overthrow the current administration.
The statement said, “No individual or political party can win the forthcoming election without the support of others. There is need for a broad coalition aimed at dislodging the propaganda-driven governance in the state.”
Odeyemi stated that the 2026 poll was too critical to be treated with partisanship alone, suggesting that only a popular figure, acceptable across party lines, could secure enough support to win.
“If such individuals clinch the ticket, I can boldly say that 40 per cent of votes will come from PDP,” he added.
He hinted that many disillusioned members of the ruling party could support an opposition coalition.
The Osun NNPP also reaffirmed its readiness to either present a candidate or back another party’s aspirant with widespread appeal.
Odeyemi maintained that integrity and cross-party recognition would guide their decision.
He claimed that many people are now realising that politics goes beyond propaganda and predicted defections from the ruling party to opposition platforms ahead of the poll.
However, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, dismissed the NNPP’s position, labelling the party structurally weak in the state.
The Osun PDP reacting through its spokesperson, Oladele Bamiji, said the NNPP lacked the reach to influence election outcomes.
Bamiji described Odeyemi’s campaign as a one-man show with little impact, asserting that Governor Adeleke remained widely popular and would win re-election in 2026.
“Odeyemi should perish the thought of raising opposition against our performing governor. The governor has accomplished much and still enjoys the people’s support,” Bamiji added.
