10-year-old son shoots inspector father dead in Anambra

Anambra State Police Command has confirmed the tragic death of Inspector Okolie Amechi, who was accidentally shot by his 10-year-old son on Sunday evening.

According to the Command, the child, unaware that the AK-47 rifle assigned to his father was loaded, pulled the trigger, shooting Amechi in the back. The accidental discharge also struck Amechi’s second child in the hand.

In a statement, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, expressed the Command’s deep sorrow over the incident, which occurred in Awka.

He said, “The son, unaware of the condition of the rifle, pulled the trigger, fatally striking Inspector Amechi and injuring his sibling.”

Inspector Amechi was rushed to hospital, where doctors confirmed his death. The second child is currently receiving medical treatment and is reported to be responding well.

The police have since recovered the rifle, and the deceased’s body has been deposited in the morgue.

The Command offered its condolences to the family and friends of the late officer, while wishing the injured child a swift recovery.
