At least four people have been confirmed dead, and several others rescued after a canoe accident at the Yauri town market riverbank in Kebbi State.

The incident, which took place earlier this week, was confirmed by Nafiu Nuhu, the Disaster Management Team Leader of the Nigerian Red Cross Society in Yauri.

According to him, the canoe capsized when water entered the vessel, causing panic and resulting in multiple drownings.

“Some of the victims were rescued from the submerging/drowning accident with the assistance of our members from the Red Cross Society of Nigeria, the National Inland Waterways Authority, NIWA, and local community members,” Nuhu said.

The Red Cross, working in coordination with NIWA and local residents, quickly mobilized to provide emergency assistance and search for missing persons.

Three bodies were recovered on Tuesday and transported to Hikiya village, located across the Yauri River.

The rescue operation was led by executive members of the Red Cross, with strong support from community volunteers and NIWA officials.
