Authorities in Kano State have arrested 11 students of Government Boarding Secondary School, Bichi, in connection with the brutal murder of two fellow students, a crime that has deeply shaken the local community.
The victims, Hamza Idris Tofawa and Umar Yusuf Dungurawa, were allegedly attacked using crude metal weapons known locally as Gwale-Gwale.
Police Launch Full Investigation
Kano State Police Command spokesperson, Abdullahi Kiyawa, confirmed on Thursday that the arrested students are undergoing interrogation to establish their individual roles in the deadly assault.
“Eleven students were arrested over the incident, and the investigation is ongoing,” Kiyawa said.
“We are treating this matter with utmost seriousness. The culprits will be brought to book once investigations are complete.”
Education Ministry Orders Probe
Kano State Commissioner for Education, Ali Makoda, has ordered a comprehensive probe into the killings. This was communicated by Permanent Secretary Bashir Mohammad during a condolence visit to the school.
“We have launched an immediate investigation and will work closely with security agencies to prevent such occurrences in the future,” he stated.
Outrage and Grief in the Community
A teacher at the school, speaking anonymously, described the killings as unprecedented:
“It’s the most disturbing thing I’ve witnessed here. We never expected to lose such young lives in this horrific way.”
Parents and community members have called for swift justice and urgent safety reforms in schools across the state.
Ongoing Response
The bodies of the slain students have been deposited at Bichi General Hospital, and post-mortems are expected to aid the investigation.
The school has been placed under tight security as authorities work to unravel the motive behind the attack and ensure justice is served.
