FG warns of imminent flooding in 11 states, urges precautionary action

The federal ministry of environment has issued a warning about potential flooding in eleven states between July 16 and 20.

Usman Bokani, the director of the National Flood Early Warning Centre under the ministry, released a flood forecast on Wednesday.

According to the notice, the affected states and locations are Adamawa (Mubi); Akwa Ibom (Edor, Upenekang, Oron, Eket); Borno (Ngala, Maiduguri); and Bauchi (Azare, Bauchi, Itas, Jama’are, Kafin-Madaki, Jama’a, Kari, Misau).

Other areas include Cross River (Calabar, Akpap); Jigawa (Miga, Gwaram, Diginsa, Ringim, Dutse); Katsina (Daura); Kano (Kunchi, Kano, Gezawa, Wudil, Bebeji, Sumaila, Tudun Wada); Plateau (Jos, Bukuru, Mangu); Yobe (Jakusko, Machina, Dapchi); and Zamfara (Bungudu, Gusau).

Bokani called on state authorities and key stakeholders to implement necessary safety measures to reduce the impact of the expected floods on people and property.

Previously, the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) identified 30 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) as areas at high risk of flooding in 2025. The agency also reported that 2,187 communities in 293 local government areas are within states classified under moderate flood risk.

In 2024, flooding incidents claimed 321 lives, affected more than 1.37 million individuals, and displaced over 740,000 people across Nigeria.
