Two held over transformer vandalism in Akwa Ibom

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested two individuals for allegedly attempting to vandalise a power transformer in Ikot Imoh village, Ikot Abasi Local Government Area.

In a statement issued in Uyo on Saturday, the command’s spokesperson, DSP Timfon John, said officers apprehended the suspects around 5:45 a.m. on Thursday July 17, following a distress call from a local resident who noticed suspicious activity near the transformer.

“Upon arriving at the scene, police officers found a group of people attempting to tamper with the transformer,” John stated. “Two suspects, Asuquo Effiong (29), from Ibesikpo Asutan LGA, and Chidiebere Onwe (30), from Nkanu LGA, Enugu State, were arrested. Other members of the gang fled on sighting the police.”

She added that the police recovered several tools at the scene, including two 17-combination flat spanners, a hose pipe, a heavy-duty cutter, and a pipe wrench with socket.

The police have launched a full investigation and said the suspects would be prosecuted once inquiries are concluded.
