The Nigerian Army has thwarted a terrorist infiltration attempt in Monguno, a town in Borno State, in the early hours of Sunday.
According to Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency platform focused on the Lake Chad region, the attempted attack occurred at about 2:55 a.m., as terrorists tried to breach the Charlie 15 axis leading into the town.
Troops from Sector 3 of Operation Hadin Kai engaged the assailants in a gun battle, successfully repelling the threat.
Sources revealed that bloodstains were observed along the retreat route, indicating possible injuries among the fleeing attackers.
Recovered items from the operation included seven rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, a PKT machine gun belt, an empty AK-47 magazine, and an RPG bomb, among others.
No casualties were recorded on the military side, and there has been no further contact with the terrorists since their withdrawal.
Monguno, a known hotspot of insurgent activities, continues to be one of the conflict-affected areas in Borno State, particularly due to the prolonged Boko Haram insurgency.
