The Alumni Association of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko (AAUA), has strongly condemned the continued killings of students, describing the situation as both unfortunate and unacceptable.
In a statement released on Friday by its Publicity Secretary, O’Seun Ogunsakin, the association denounced the recent murders of three undergraduates, allegedly committed by individuals from the host community.
The alumni body urged urgent intervention from the Ondo State Government, security agencies—including the Nigeria Police and the Department of State Services—as well as the traditional ruler of Akungba-Akoko.
“We are shocked and deeply grieved by the killing of three promising AAUA students. The latest victim was a diligent final-year student and PoS operator,” the statement read.
They described the killings as part of a troubling pattern of extortion and hostility by members of the host community towards university students.
“These criminal acts, culminating in the brutal murder of AAUA students, demand immediate and decisive action from all key stakeholders—particularly the Ondo State Government, security forces, and the community leaders,” the statement continued.
The alumni emphasised that parents and society at large have the right to expect a safe and secure environment for all students, regardless of their origin.
They further expressed concern that the once peaceful community is increasingly becoming a hub for criminal activity, warning that failure by the town to rein in criminal elements could return Akungba to a lawless state reminiscent of the pre-university era.
The association called on Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa to demonstrate greater commitment to the university by prioritising the development of on-campus accommodation.
They urged the state government to begin the construction of new hostels and complete existing abandoned hostel projects to improve student safety and welfare.
