The National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Ajibola Basiru, has advised former Kaduna State governor, Nasir el-Rufai, to focus on productive engagements instead of attempting to distract President Bola Tinubu.

During an interview with Tribune Online on Sunday, Basiru criticised el-Rufai for directing his energy toward political activities ahead of the 2027 elections, which are still two years away.

His comments followed el-Rufai’s address to African Democratic Congress (ADC) supporters in Sokoto on Saturday, where the former governor urged Nigerians not to support the APC in the next presidential poll, warning of dire consequences if the party retains power.

El-Rufai had also declared his commitment to mobilising Nigerians against the APC, accusing the ruling party of incompetence.

In response, Basiru questioned the urgency behind el-Rufai’s recent political moves and suggested he seek alternative pursuits.

“Why is he in a hurry? 2027 is far. The guidelines for the 2027 elections won’t be out until February 2026. El-Rufai should go and find a job to do,” Basiru said.

He added that the former governor could use the time to return to school or spend time with his grandchildren, noting that the APC is focused on strengthening the party while President Tinubu is occupied with the business of governance.
