Police in Ebonyi State have rescued two kidnapped students unharmed in the Ikwo Local Government Area.
Acting on intelligence, operatives from the Ikwo Police Division stormed an uncompleted building where the victims were being held. Commissioner of Police, CP Anthonia Uche-Anya, disclosed this on Wednesday while briefing journalists at the Command headquarters in Abakaliki, the state capital.
She confirmed that the students were rescued without injury and that three suspects had been arrested and remain in custody as investigations continue.
Between July and mid-August 2025, the Command arrested 131 suspects for various offences, 52 of whom have already been charged to court. Police also recovered six vehicles, 15 assorted firearms, and 50 rounds of ammunition, and dismantled several criminal hideouts across the state.
CP Uche-Anya noted that Ebonyi, being largely agrarian, often experiences land and boundary disputes during the farming season. To address this, the Command has deployed early warning mechanisms, engaged stakeholders in dialogue, and adopted non-violent approaches to prevent crises.
Following the Ekoli Edda crisis of July 9, 2025, which resulted in the murder of Udu Nnachi, the Command’s Special Weapons and Tactics team arrested three suspects: Amarachi Ude, Idika Ama Okoro, and Sunday Ama Olughu, who will be arraigned once investigations conclude.
On 28 July 2025, the Anti-Kidnapping Unit, acting on credible intelligence, raided the hideout of hoodlums terrorising Umuogodo-Akpu Ngbo in Ohaukwu LGA. They arrested Icha Chidiebere and recovered an AK-47 rifle, a Dakota vehicle, and an unregistered Lexus 330 SUV.
Further successes include the August 14, 2025 arrest of Agboti Kingsley in Ivo LGA. Hired to instigate a crisis in the Ekembe community, he is now assisting the police with valuable information.
CP Uche-Anya thanked residents for their support and assured that the Command remains committed to safeguarding lives and property while sustaining peace across Ebonyi.
The public is encouraged to report suspicious activities or emergencies through the Command’s Control Room via 07064515001.
