A passenger train from Abuja to Kaduna derailed on Tuesday morning, causing panic among passengers and their families.
The incident occurred along the Kaduna corridor shortly after the train left Abuja at about 11 a.m. en route to Kaduna. A passenger described the atmosphere as chaotic, with people scrambling to safety in fear and confusion.
The cause of the derailment remains unknown, and officials have not confirmed any injuries or fatalities. Security sources said military personnel were deployed to the site to evacuate stranded passengers.
The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) initially kept silent but later confirmed the derailment of its Kaduna-bound AKTS service.
NRC Managing Director, Kayode Opeifa, said in a statement that the derailment occurred at 11:09 a.m. at kilometre 49 between Kubwa and Asham stations. He added that emergency rescue teams, medical staff, and nearby hospitals had been mobilised.
“A full complement of security is already on the ground, and efforts are ongoing to move all passengers safely back to Abuja,” Opeifa stated.
