Manchester United crashed out of the League Cup on Wednesday in humiliating fashion, losing 12-11 on penalties to fourth-tier Grimsby after a 2-2 draw.

League Two side Grimsby stunned United by going 2-0 up with 15 minutes remaining through goals from Charles Vernam and Tyrell Warren.

Bryan Mbeumo ignited a late comeback with his first goal for the club before United forced the shootout. However, the Cameroonian forward missed the decisive penalty, sealing Grimsby’s famous victory and intensifying pressure on under-fire manager Ruben Amorim.
