The Lagos State Police Command has restricted activities for the ongoing Egungun festival, confining them to designated outing points and celebration venues.
Police said the order aims to protect lives and property while respecting the rights of all religious and cultural groups in the state.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the Command’s spokesperson, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the directive. He stated that the order prohibits public processions and street marches by masquerade practitioners, stressing that this measure will ensure safety and prevent infringements on the rights of others.
The Command explained that the decision followed recent incidents of disturbances, property damage, and violent clashes between rival Egungun groups in different parts of Lagos.
“To guarantee public safety and stop further clashes and destruction, masquerade groups must adhere strictly to these restrictions,” the statement read. “They must also notify the Commissioner of Police and apply for security cover before any outings.”
Police warned that anyone who violates the directive or threatens public peace will face prosecution.
“The Command will apply the full weight of the law against any Egungun masquerade, adherent, or supporter who breaches order, violates human rights, or disturbs the peace in Lagos State,” the statement added.
