One person was killed and two others were wounded on Wednesday in a shooting at a US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention facility in Dallas, officials said.

According to the Dallas Police Department, the suspected gunman, who opened fire on the ICE centre from a nearby building, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem confirmed the shooter’s death and condemned the rising violence targeting immigration authorities.

“While we don’t know the motive yet, we know that our ICE law enforcement officers are facing unprecedented violence against them,” Noem said on X. “It must stop.”

Local broadcaster Fox4 reported that the three people shot were detainees in ICE custody. The gunman, positioned on the roof of a nearby building, shot himself as law enforcement agents approached.

ICE Deputy Director Madison Sheahan told Fox News that no ICE officers were injured.

“We’ve seen a lot of violence at ICE facilities, and this is not the first time an attack has happened, even this year,” Sheahan said.

Vice President JD Vance also condemned the shooting, calling for an end to “the obsessive attack on law enforcement, particularly ICE.” He added, “I’m praying for everyone hurt in this attack and for their families.”

ICE, the federal agency responsible for enforcing President Donald Trump’s pledge to expel millions of undocumented migrants from the United States, has been a frequent target of protests and violence.

Earlier this year, immigration raids in Los Angeles sparked widespread unrest, prompting Trump to deploy the National Guard and Marines to the city.

Another ICE facility in Alvarado, Texas, was attacked in July, leaving a police officer with a neck injury. Ten people were later charged for their involvement after reportedly firing fireworks at the facility and spray-painting “Traitor” and “ICE Pig” on cars and guard structures.

The Alvarado incident occurred just days before a separate attack at a US Border Patrol facility in McAllen, Texas, where a 27-year-old man opened fire with an assault rifle. The assailant, who fired dozens of rounds at the entrance, was shot dead by authorities. Two police officers and a Border Patrol employee were injured in that incident.
