One of the suspects connected to the death of Arise TV news anchor Somtochukwu Maduagwu, Sani Sirajo, has reportedly told police that he attempted to stop her from jumping off the storey building.

On Thursday, police confirmed the arrest of 12 suspected armed robbers linked to the attack that resulted in the deaths of Somtochukwu, also known as Sommie, and security guard Barnabas Danlami.

On September 29, about 15 armed men stormed Unique Apartments, a 16-flat, three-storey building in the Katampe area. During the attack, the security guard was shot, and Sommie reportedly jumped from the building.

According to a police statement, Sirajo claimed he tried to prevent Sommie from falling but could not hold her due to her weight.

The police also stated that another suspect, Shamsudeen Hassan, confessed to shooting the security guard when he attempted to stop them from entering the premises.

Shortly after the incident, four suspects were tracked and arrested through phones stolen from the victims. Recovered items included a fabricated AK-47 rifle, 36 rounds of 9mm live ammunition, one locally made pistol, one pump-action gun, two live cartridges, and four mobile phones belonging to the victims.

The statement added that Shamsudeen confessed to driving a stolen white Honda CR-V out of the compound after the operation, and the suspects admitted to receiving ₦200,000 each from the robbery proceeds.
