Prominent labour activist and Secretary of the Joint Action Front (JAF), Comrade Abiodun Aremu, has passed away after being struck by a vehicle while attempting to cross the road to his home in Ota, Ogun State, on Sunday, October 12, 2025.
The 65-year-old was hit at about 6 p.m. and quickly taken to a nearby hospital, where doctors tried to resuscitate him with oxygen. Sadly, despite their efforts, he was later pronounced dead.
Aremu, a respected voice in Nigeria’s labour movement and civil society, was known for his commitment to justice, workers’ welfare, and social transformation.
Until his death, he served as Secretary of JAF, the umbrella body for pro-labour civil society organisations in the country.
Following his death, the Aremu family and the Labour Movement have agreed to shift his burial to October 23, 2025, to allow the movement organise a befitting farewell for the late activist. He was initially scheduled to be buried on Monday, October 13 (today).
In a statement issued on behalf of the Labour Movement, Comrade Owei Lakemfa, former Secretary-General of the Organisation of African Trade Union Unity, OATUU, and ex-Acting General Secretary of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, announced the new date.
“The Aremu family has agreed with the Labour Movement that the interment of our leader, Comrade Abiodun ‘Aremson’ Aremu, be moved by about two weeks to allow for proper mobilisation and attendance,” Lakemfa said.
According to him, the burial will now hold on Thursday, October 23, 2025, at 30 Kabiru Fatoye Street, Opposite Alaka Field, Ijako Sugar Bus Stop, Ifo Road, Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway.
Lakemfa extended condolences to the bereaved family, describing Aremu as a courageous comrade and a tireless defender of the oppressed.
